As the world recognizes Disability Employment Awareness Month (DEAM), Design Distributors has been featured by online accessibility resource directory InclusionHub for its commitment to inclusive hiring practices.

Design Distributors President Adam Avrick was proud to recognize the contributions of Shane Lando, who is on the Autism spectrum. Lando, who studied computer information technology in college, has quickly grown into a valuable member of the family-owned company.

“Whatever we give him, he’s been successful doing, which is just awesome,” Adam says. “We’re very happy. In fact, I contacted St. Joseph’s after his first year and said, ‘Who have you got next in the line-up for me?’ They only had one Shane, and we got him.”

“Working with Design Distributors Inc. has had a positive impact on me,” Shane said, adding: “My hope for the future of Design Distributors Inc. is that the company gradually expands the number of employees by hiring more highly-skilled people who are on the Autism spectrum just like me.”

Shari Lando, Shane’s mom, credited Design Distributors with having a positive impact on her son’s life, telling InclusionHub that it feels like “more than just a place of employment.”

Founded in 1966 by brothers David and Stuart Avrick, the Deer Park, NY-based company has evolved from an envelope printing business to a full-service direct mail marketing company specializing in mailing, data processing, printing, and imaging. Promoting equal access for everyone has always been mission-critical to the industry-leading company, said Adam, adding that his brother Scott is also on the Autism spectrum.

Seeking out ways to be more inclusive, Adam has frequently connected with local school districts and orchestrated vocational training programs on-site—feeling that promoting equal access for everyone is mission-critical for the company.

Creating more “win-win” opportunities for candidates with diverse backgrounds and abilities, such as Shane, is the company’s goal, Adam said.

That the Design Distributors InclusionHub feature comes during DEAM is even more meaningful. The decades-long initiative celebrates the diverse contributions of all workers and raises awareness about the impacts people with disabilities have on society. The campaign, which first began in the United States, has grown into a global cause that hopes to improve access to employment for people with disabilities.
